Who Would You Marry?

"Who would you marry? A poor beautiful woman or a very rich older woman?" This was a question asked by a teacher before her class ended. It was English and she said she wanted to "provoke" some arguments. The question don't seem too hard for one of my classmates. If I recalled (or guessed!) correctly, he said he would marry the poor beautiful woman. Who needs the old woman's wealth if he's already rich." Then the teacher added a new premise -- "Man, you are poor." which made the decision even more difficult.

Before my classmate made his point, I had already pointed out to the teacher that the question itself suggested that "very rich older" woman are beautiful as well, but the teacher disagreed. The question itself was vague, for older could mean older than the poor beautiful woman or older than the man.

I couldn't give an honest answer because I was trying to avoid all the "political incorrectness". However, now that I'm sitting in front of my computer, let's think well and reason!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*First of all, no content in this post shall imply women's inferiority to men. Under this premise we shall reason.

I think the conflicts of all guys arise from the words "rich, older". If it were for the girls to choose between poor handsome man and very rich older man, neither choices would be "incorrect" or in other words subject to moral judgement. I believe that it is traditionally a norm that "the man" in the family, in this case the husband, "should" take up the financial burden, and provide comfort for the family. Indeed, many Chinese tend to look down upon men who are financially dependent to their wife. They are said to be "eating soft rice" which is a very unmanly term.

Alright. It seems like I'm limiting myself to writing on "financially dependent". What if the man is NOT financially dependent, but earn less than his wife? That shouldn't be a problem right? After some thinking, I have to say that maybe men depends on women even more! I mean, traditionally, it is the mothers' job to take care of the children, to cook, to do the laundry, etc. What were men doing? Now, women go to work just like men do, but most of them still cook, do the laundry.......And then they're always asked about questions like "how do you keep a balance between your family and your career". I've never seen/heard men being asked of this question!
(Does this mean that most men are "eating soft rice"? I personally think it does, if we are to continue using this discriminating/biased term.)

Now the age issue. To make life easier for me, I probably should interpret the word "older" as "older than the poor beautiful woman". But if I do so, I will not have the chance to think think, and think. Therefore, "older" here means "older than the man". Well, who says the wife has to be younger than the husband? It might be less common, but it's certainly acceptable. Also, comparing the statistics from all over the world, it is found that men have a shorter life span as compared to women. So for couples of the same age, it is more probable that the male will pass away before the female, and then the female will be sad for maybe......a few months? If the female is older than the male, then maybe their "timing" of death will be better, ideally dying at the same time together. (OMG what am I saying!) (You know, there's a whole romantic idea in Chinese literature which goes 不能同年同月同日生,但愿同年同月同日死,which I think most Chinese wouldn't be unfamilliar with. Do point it out to me if I have misused/misinterpreted this quote.)

It may start to seem apparent to you that I'm going to "marry" the "rich older woman", but just keep on reading before you make any inferences.

About the beauty. I guess (just a wild guess) some of my classmates chose the "poor beautiful" woman because of the "eating soft rice" issue plus their lust. My friend gave a smart answer. He said he'd marry the "very rich older" woman because that woman will have the money to do a plastic surgery. (Girls, don't get angry, I do not agree with him.) Well, I guess beauty is more important than wealth in this case, considering "I", or "the man" has never seen the two women. It is much easier to love someone for his/her beauty rather than wealth, isn't it?

Were the women to accept any men who propose first, then I think it would be rather selfish for men to choose the "poor beautiful" woman. Do be reminded that "Man, you are poor.". Doesn't the beautiful woman deserves someone better, richer, more handsome........? Because poor+poor = you two are still poor. LOL. But another counter-example arises. "Then wouldn't the "very rich older" woman deserves someone who is also better, richer, more handsome......."

OMG. How am I going to get myself out of this mess. I reached to this conclusion shortly after the class was dismissed --- "I'd marry neither."

A politically-correct reason/conclusion : Women are not goods. They are not to be compared with their "pros and cons". (deep breath --- "How dare you!!!!") Of course "there is always some madness in love. But there is always some reason in madness". But if someone were to CHOOSE between two women, then he could not allege that as love, rather, it is a deal. Another reason is that, beautiful or rich women would not be so stupid to let men choose between them. It is such an insult! (unless they're complete airheads.)

You're all I ever wanted ;
